First Steps for Teachers

We have created the following exercises to get you used to some of the standard functions that are part of the teaching package. This is a perfect introduction to the eSchools platform for new starters. If after logging in, you cannot see some of the functions listed on this page, these may need to be turned on for you - speak to an administrator at your school or use the contact page to let us know.

1. Settings

  1. Hopefully you have received an initial password from an Administrator.  Upon logging in, we urge you to change that first password to something more memorable. The first thing to do would be to Change your password to something more memorable.
  2. Next, you can customise your platform with a background.
  3. Finally, check your photo; this will be what your student will see when they login. You can change it within the settings.

2. Classes

  1. If you are connected to a class, you can create a page that only your students and parents can see. Click on Set up to start building a class page.
  2. Start by creating a welcome message using the text tool.
  3. Explore the other tools to add other elements to your page. Add something that will encourage your students and their parents to log in regularly (notices, spellings of the week, star pupil of the week etc.). The key is keep content on this page minimal, but refresh it on a regular basis.

3. Register

  1. Familiarise yourself with the register. Make sure you know where the ‘save register’ button is, and how long your register is open for during registration periods.
  2. Check that all of your students are present. If you see any anomalies, such as incorrect names or missing photographs report these to your administrator to check.

4. Files

  1. Clicked the Shared Files folder to see if a colleague has added any files for you.
  2. Now, let’s create a personal folder for your own work. Click on New Folder and create a folder called “My Notes”. Add some documents here.
  3. Let’s also create a folder for collaborative work. Create another new folder to be shared with a colleague. Once made, you can add some documents to it. Now, share it with a single colleague or a group of colleagues using the cog on the right.

5. App

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play and log in. You will need your login details and the name of the school.
  2. Look through the tools from the menu.
  3. For the tools below, check the app once the exercises are complete. You should see that the Calendar and Messages on the app will mirror the changes you make on those functions on the platform.

6. Calendar

  1. Try adding a new event, maybe your birthday, sharing it with all teachers. You never know, they might decide to buy you a present when the day comes!
  2. Add a colleague’s calendar, so that you can see their events as well.
  3. Check your notifications to see if you have been added to any events.

7. Messages

  1. Try sending a test message to a colleague. Ask them to reply to your message so that you can monitor how this appears in your inbox.
  2. Send another message to the same colleague – this time ensure that the ‘broadcast only’ switch is on. They will not be able to reply to this message.
  3. Delete these two messages.
